Candle Care

Everything we tell every new candle owner — the small habits that make one candle last twice as long as another.

Step 01

The first burn

most important step!

Candles have a memory. The first time you light one, the wax melts outward from the wick and wherever it reaches becomes a kind of edge. If you only burn the candle for 30 minutes the first time, it will tunnel forever.

Light it on a slow afternoon. Let the wax melt all the way to the edge of the jar — for our standard candles, that is 2 to 3 hours. After this first long burn, you can light it for as little as you like.

Step 02

Trim your wick

before every single burn

Before each burn, trim the wick to about 5mm (¼ inch). A long wick will mushroom, smoke, and burn through your wax twice as fast.

A wick trimmer is the cleanest tool, but small scissors work too. Tweezers and a steady hand. Trim it cool, never while lit.

Step 03

Don't over-burn

2–4 hours, then rest

We recommend burning our candles for no more than four hours at a stretch. Beyond that, the vessel gets hot, the wick wanders, and the fragrance starts to dull.

Let it cool for at least two hours before relighting. The wax needs to set before it can melt cleanly again.

Step 04

Keep it still

drafts ruin a clean burn

An open window, a ceiling fan, a doorway — anything that moves the air will tip your flame and make the wax pool unevenly.

Place your candle on a flat, heat-safe surface, away from anything that flutters.

Step 05

Store cool and dim

out of direct sunlight

Soy wax is sensitive to heat. A candle left in a sunny window or hot car will frost, sweat, or lose fragrance.

Keep candles below 25°C, away from radiators and stoves, with the lid on when not in use. Yes — the lid actually matters.

Step 06

When the wax runs out

don't throw the jar away

When about 5mm of wax remains, stop burning. Lighting it past that point can crack the vessel.

Pour boiling water in, wait for the last wax to float, then pour it off. Wipe with a paper towel. The jar is yours now — for matches, tiny plants, loose change, or the next candle if we are doing refills by then.

Step 07

Safety basics

the same ones you already know

Never leave a burning candle unattended.

Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Never burn near curtains, books, papers, or anything else that catches.

Always extinguish before leaving the room or going to sleep.

When something looks off

None of these mean your candle is broken. Every one has a one-minute fix.

Tunnelling?
Wrap foil loosely around the rim for one burn, leaving a hole for the flame. The edges catch up.
Smoky, mushroom wick?
The wick is too long. Snuff it, let it cool, trim to 5mm, and relight.
White frost on the wax?
That's soy being soy — natural crystallisation. Harmless, and it burns exactly the same.
Faint scent?
Give it a full melt pool and a smaller room. Fragrance builds in still air, not hallways.

✦ Quick reference ✦

The whole guide, five lines

  • 1. First burn — until the wax pools edge to edge.
  • 2. Trim the wick to 5mm before every burn.
  • 3. Never burn more than 4 hours at once.
  • 4. Stop at 5mm of wax — wash the jar, keep it.
  • 5. Lid on when not in use.
